Selective Cooling of the Brain in Newborn Piglets and Rabbits Using a Novel Nasopharyngeal Method

چکیده
Introduction Mild hypothermia has become an effective neuroprotective strategy following head trauma, cardiac arrest and neonatal asphyxia. However, cooling the whole body below 33-34°C can induce severe complications; therefore, selective brain cooling (SBC) could minimize adverse effects by maintaining core body temperature at normal values over an extended period of time. Recently, we developed a novel method of SBC and demonstrated its safety and efficacy in a piglet model. The method was based on spraying room temperature or cold air into the nostrils at different flow rates. Pigs possess a carotid rete (a set of small parallel arteries) which is surrounded by the cavernous sinus; together these serve as an effective heat exchanger for the brain. However, in mammals in which the carotid rete is missing such as rabbits and humans, some suggest that there is no effective heat exchange in the cavernous sinus and, consequently, SBC is not efficient in these species.

Significant head cooling can be achieved while maintaining normothermia in the newborn piglet.
BACKGROUND Hypothermia has been shown to be neuroprotective in animal models of hypoxia-ischaemia. It is currently being evaluated as a potentially therapeutic option in the management of neonatal hypoxic-ischaemic encephalopathy. However, significant hypothermia has adverse systemic effects. It has also recently been found that the stress of being cold can abolish the neuroprotective effects o...
متن کاملEffect of Neonatal Asphyxia on the Impairment of the Auditory Pathway by Recording Auditory Brainstem Responses in Newborn Piglets: A New Experimentation Model to Study the Perinatal Hypoxic-Ischemic Damage on the Auditory System
INTRODUCTION Hypoxia-ischemia (HI) is a major perinatal problem that results in severe damage to the brain impairing the normal development of the auditory system. The purpose of the present study is to study the effect of perinatal asphyxia on the auditory pathway by recording auditory brain responses in a novel animal experimentation model in newborn piglets. METHOD Hypoxia-ischemia was ind...

Catha edulis is an evergreen tree with psychotropic effects. The present work was conducted to evaluate the possible effects of the ethanolic extracts of Catha edulis leaves (ECE) on the electrical activity of 4 areas in the brain of male rabbits. Forty male rabbits weighting 2200-2500 g were divided into 4 groups. The electrical activity of motor, somato–sensory, occipital, and auditory ...
متن کامل[The first application of therapeutic hypothermia in Poland--selective head cooling (Cool-Cap) with whole-body moderate hypothermia in a newborn with features of hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy].
The authors present the first application of therapeutic hypothermia in a newborn in Poland. The female newborn, born with severe asphyxia, was transported to a referral perinatal center where the method of brain cooling was possible. Severe hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy was confirmed by an integrated EEG. During the cooling procedure (which lasted 72 hours), no important side effects were no...

BACKGROUND The highly selective α2 -adrenoreceptor agonist, dexmedetomidine, exerts neuroprotective, analgesic, anti-inflammatory and sympatholytic properties that may be beneficial for perinatal asphyxia. The optimal safe dose for pre-clinical newborn neuroprotection studies is unknown. METHODS Following cerebral hypoxia-ischaemia, dexmedetomidine was administered to nine newborn piglets in ...
